Hopefully everyone had a great time over Christmas and best wishes to all for the New Year!

It's been a few years now since we had a New Year's Eve ball at Malone, therefore we're closing early tomorrow (catering at 4pm and bar at 5pm) before re-opening again on Thursday 2nd January. However, the club shop will be open on New Year's Day for anyone planning to play golf and access to the locker rooms  will be available throughout the day.

New Filtered Water Machine In The Golfers' Lobby

For anyone who is not already aware, or who may not have noticed, a filtered water dispenser unit has now been installed in the golfers' lobby. This is just one small step towards sustainability at Malone Golf Club, which means that members and visitors can fill (or refill) their water bottles, thus minimising single use plastic. Malone branded aluminium bottles will soon be available to purchase from the club shop for anyone who might be interested in doing so.

Ongoing Tree Maintenance/Clearance

Work is continuing around the course in respect of tree clearance and thinning of copses, similar to what has been done in recent winters between the 13th, 14th and 15th holes on the Ballydrain Nine. The areas behind the 7th and 8th tees have been thinned out to allow more light and air, which will improve the quality of the turf on these teeing areas.

The copse of trees between the 4th and 5th tees on the Drumbridge Nine have also been thinned out/reduced in similar fashion, which will allow the green staff to maintain this area much more effectively.

Lastly, the laurels beside the path leading up to the 16th tee on the Ballydrain Nine have been cut back and the cleared area has now been barked, which is a big improvement aesthetically and will also reduce shading of the main teeing area on this hole.

Best Parkland In Ulster Award & Best Manager Ulster Award for 2020

As mentioned in the latest edition of Malone News, MGC has been given the 'Best Parkland Award - Ulster' for 2020 by the Golfers Guide To Ireland, and I was also bestowed with the award for Best Manager in Ulster for 2020. It is always nice to be recognised with these types of award, and with the improvements being made to the course at present and also those planned for the next couple of years I would hope it won't be too long before we gain further recognition/acknowledgement.

The Tipperary Crystal vases/awards are currently on display in the Ballydrain Bar in case anyone wishes to take a closer look!

New Parking Facilities At Rear Of Courtyard

The area to the rear of the courtyard buildings has now been laid in tarmac and will soon be planted, with proper parking spaces also being marked out. The intended use for this area will be to enable those members who wish to avail of the new short game and long game practice facilities in the coming season to park nearby and have easy access during off peak periods (i.e. early morning or late evening).

This new area will also act as an overflow car park from the staff car park at the rear of the clubhouse, which can often get quite congested when deliveries are being made, etc. The rear wall of the courtyard has been sandblasted and cleaned up and this whole area is now much more attractive and generally more in keeping with the rest of the estate.
