We removed two of the greenside bunkers 'in house' within the last couple of years, which meant that we were only left with two bunkers on the 7th hole - one greenside bunker and one (very significant) fairway bunker.
Although the changes on this hole were perhaps the least in terms of manpower/effort, the simple act of taking away the fairway bunker is huge!
There will always be opinions both for and against, but I would expect most of the membership will be very happy to see the fairway bunker disappear.
Personally speaking, I would have preferred to have waited another few years to give the rowan trees (beyond where the bunker used to be) time to grow up a little more, but as time progresses these trees will become even more of an obstacle than they are now.
The 'before' and 'after' images above show just how dramatic a change filling in this bunker has been - now at least most of us will have half a chance of advancing our ball a bit more, rather than wedging out of the bunker just to get back in play for our next shot.
Attention was then turned to the greenside bunker, which was remodelled in situ before the new liner, sand and turf were introduced:-
Although we now only have one solitary bunker on the 7th hole, I have no doubt it will still play as the toughest hole on the course going forward.
Some remodelling of the slope at the front right of the green has yet to be carried out, but we hope this will also be done later in the year.
Hole #8 summary to follow next.
