Old Friends

Over the years Malone Golf Club has forged close ties with a number of other clubs and societies: some of these links originated in Malone’s glory days of the 50’s and 60’s when the senior teams would engage in matches with other clubs on their travels.

Lahinch Trophy

One of the earliest of these is an annual match against Lahinch Golf Club: the fixture lapsed for a while but has been reinstated in recent years and the two clubs contest the Lahinch Trophy (first played for between Queen’s University, Belfast and Lahinch in 1955) on an alternating home and away basis.

Pirates and Moonlighters

The late 50’s also saw the inauguration of the Malone Pirates, an active society within the Club which enjoys long standing fixtures against Dublin University Golfing Society (played alternately at Portmarnock and Malone) and Edmondstown Golf Club in Dublin (also played at alternating venues). Over the last 15 years the Pirates have also forged strong links with two Philadelphia clubs, Sunnybrook Golf Club (against whom they play for the Shillelagh Trophy) and Gulph Mills Golf Club (the “Shabby Jacket” is awarded to the losing team in these matches). The Pirates also play an annual match against another Malone Golf Club society, the Moonlighters.

Moseley Golf Club and the MCC

Another annual fixture that has become established in the Malone calendar is a match against Moseley Golf Club in Birmingham which originated in 1999. This is also played year about and places on the team for this very sociable weekend are keenly sought after. An annual match against the MCC has also recently found a regular place in the diary with matches being played year about at Malone and The Berkshire.

The Bradbury Cup

Since 1972 Malone has participated in the Bradbury Cup, contested by teams from Balmoral, Dunmurry, Lisburn and Malone Golf Clubs on an annual basis with the venue rotating round the four clubs.

The 1895 Club

Malone is a member of The 1895 Club, an association of over 30 clubs throughout the United Kingdom all founded in 1895 and offering reciprocal courtesy of the course to visitors from other member clubs.

Others

Visiting teams from Cambridge and Durham Universities have been entertained in recent years, and the Club is always happy to hear from clubs and societies looking for a match and a bit of craic.
